Graduate Water Resources Scientist - Petone

Are you a new graduate (or soon to graduate in 2026) with a tertiary qualification in Earth or Environmental Science, Physical Geography or Environmental Engineering and aspirations to develop and grow in a collaborative and supportive environment, then join Stantec’s Graduate Programme!

Fantastic perks we provide

  • Engineering NZ accredited 2-year graduate development programme
  • NZD71,000 base salary with company benefits on top such as spot bonuses, banking discounts, and an extra day's leave.
  • Receive a range of insurances including health cover through Southern Cross Medical Insurance
  • You will be connected to our international Developing Professionals Group Network with opportunities for training and networking across New Zealand and Australia.
  • You will be supported through your Engineering New Zealand Accreditation and mentored for your own personal career development.
  • Flexible working environments and excellent employee benefits

What do our Graduate Water Resources Scientists / Engineers do?

As a Graduate Water Resources Scientist or Engineer , you will be working on a broad range of local and international projects aimed at safeguarding our communities from flood hazard and protecting our environment. Whether it’s managing flood risk, conducting hydrological assessments to support hydro power projects, or managing the water quality of stormwater discharges, we’ve done it before.

You will work in the detail of our projects so that you can develop your science or engineering skills solving real world problems that are impacting our communities.

We expect that you would primarily be based in Stantec’s Petone office to work alongside our senior Water Resources Scientists and Engineers, with the opportunity to relocate part or full-time to the Wellington office once you gain more experience.

Some projects that our graduates have recently been involved in

  • Analysis of a flood warning network to identify at‑risk communities without in‑catchment monitoring.
  • Hydrological analysis (modelling) of multiple catchments in Fiji to understand water availability for a potential new hydro power scheme.
  • Monitoring of stormwater network discharges for potential impacts on the receiving environment.
  • Hydrological analysis to inform the design of a new bridge following damage during Cyclone Gabrielle.
  • We enjoy a wide variety of work in our team, some day‑to‑day tasks may include

  • Hydrological analysis and / or modelling to support flood hazard projects, transport projects, river engineering, dam projects or hydro power projects.
  • Assessment of flood risk, and management or mitigation options.
  • Providing input to integrated catchment management planning.
  • Assessing stormwater catchments and peak flows for different design storm events.
  • Water quality sampling, data analysis and interpretation and reporting.
  • Using GIS software to undertake analysis and prepare outputs.
  • Attending workshops, training, and career development opportunities.
  • Writing assessments, reports, memos, and other project management documentation.
  • Supporting the production of proposals or other appropriate business development tasks.
  • What you will bring

You will be a recent graduate with a tertiary qualification in Earth or Environmental Science, Physical Geography, or Environmental Engineering, ready to kick start your professional career! You are motivated, pragmatic, and have an appetite for learning and gaining experience across various disciplines and geographies.

You will have a strong interest in Water Resources. Given the diverse nature of this discipline, you will have the flexibility and enthusiasm to engage in a wide range of projects. This may include technical tasks such as data analysis and modelling, as well as projects that demand strategic thinking, workshopping, multidisciplinary teams and the potential for community engagement. Additionally, you will :

  • Hold tertiary qualifications in Earth or Environmental Science, Physical Geography, or Environmental Engineering
  • Be enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn
  • Have completed papers in hydrology or water resources. Papers in hydraulics would be beneficial.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • To be eligible to apply, you must also :

  • Be a recent graduate or due to complete your tertiary education in 2026
  • Preferably hold a current restricted or full driving licence
  • Working rights in New Zealand (Student Visa holder, convertible to post‑study open work visa, Permanent Resident OR Citizen)
  • Application Advice and Tips

  • Refer to our CV and Cover Letter advice on Prosple.
  • We will let you know once this opportunity opens!
