Our Governance puni is seeking an experienced Chief Advisor to work closely with our Statutory Entities and Appointments team in Wellington. Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, Governance, this project role will focus on developing and enhancing Ministry performance monitoring capability. The Chief Advisor will be functionally responsible to the Manager Statutory Entities and Appointments, who will provide day‑to‑day direction on work programmes and project deliverables. This role is focussed on the systems and processes that underpin the Ministry’s ability to support and leverage the Crown's relationship with Māori through effective entity monitoring and performance oversight.

The Chief Advisor, Statutory Entities will be responsible for delivering on a project to enhance the Ministry’s performance monitoring analytical framework, tools and templates. In addition, the Chief Advisor will advise and support the Manager and Portfolio Leads in strengthening the Ministry’s Statutory Entities and Appointments function. The ideal candidate will offer broad experience in leveraging performance monitoring, statutory appointments, and board nominations to achieve Crown ownership expectations. The Chief Advisor will also :

  • provide expert guidance on the relevant technical standards and processes established through legislation and central agency guidance.
  • engage with monitored entity leadership teams using strong relationship management and engagement skills.

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence Māori development and Crown-Māori relations through strategic advice and operational excellence.

The appointable range for this role is $180,014 - $225,018 (100%). The full range of the grade is $180,014 - $270,022 (120%) pro rated for the fixed term period.

This is a full-time fixed-term role, but we’re happy to consider part-time (around 0.8 FTE) for the right candidate

Ko wai koe - About you

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and / or substantial relevant senior‑level experience.
  • Demonstrable professional experience operating and advising on Crown ownership and performance monitoring perspectives, preferably with some experience of such in a Central Agency context
  • Proven ability to lead significant projects with multi‑dimensional teams
  • You will have depth of experience providing advice to ministers and executive leadership.
  • You will be a great communicator with an ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and have a clear understanding of statutory bodies and other public roles appointments
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and the Crown's obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment showing a passion for coaching and developing high potential colleagues, while managing competing priorities.
