Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga - The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) leads Aotearoa - New Zealand's housing and urban development work programme.

Mō te tūnga| About the role

The Māori-Crown Relations team contributes to the strategic direction, frameworks and work programme to strengthen Māori-Crown relationships across the housing and urban development system, to deliver on Government priorities and achieve positive housing outcomes with and for iwi Māori.

As Principal Advisor, Māori-Crown Relations you will contribute to the development and implementation of the Ministry’s strategic direction, frameworks and work programmes for Māori-Crown relations, and supporting and advising on the implementation of these across the Ministry.

In the role you will :

  • provide high quality strategic and system-level advice and analysis around the Māori-Crown relationship and the Treaty of Waitangi | Te Tiriti o Waitangi for the Ministry
  • work in partnership with iwi Māori, key Māori organisations, other agencies, and external partners as needed to respond to housing system challenges and achieve long-term outcomes.
  • share your te ao Māori knowledge and expertise across work programmes and provide advice to enable people across the Ministry to understand and uphold Treaty commitments and engage meaningfully with Māori.
  • monitor and report on Māori-Crown strategies, frameworks and approaches, to track progress and lead the organisation to be a good Treaty partner.

The salary range for this role is $144,464 – $176,568 +3% Kiwisaver contribution.

This is a fixed term role for 6 months, based in Wellington.

You will be committed to strengthening the Māori-Crown relationship, and to growing your knowledge and use of te ao Māori, te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and māori values and perspectives in your work, while supporting others to do the same.

To be successful in this role you will have :

  • Proven experience providing high quality insights and advice to executive or senior leaders that align to organisational priorities, ideally in the public service
  • Proficiency in te reo Māori with a grounded understanding of tikanga, and confidence in te ao Māori
  • In-depth understanding of the machinery of government.
  • Depth of knowledge and expertise in Te Tiriti o Waitangi / Treaty of Waitangi, the Public Service Act 2020 and other legislation that is relevant to the Māori Crown relationship
  • Proven ability to work in partnership with iwi Māori, and to provide strategic advice around the MāoriCrown relationship that achieves long-term outcomes
  • Sound business acumen, with experience contributing to the development and delivery of strategic and operational plans and processes, and driving change
  • Proven experience leading and contributing to organisational initiatives, bringing the right people together to achieve the right outcomes, and leading, coaching and mentoring others in an inclusive way
  • A proven ability to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, navigate issues and solve problems
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; with a proven ability to write to a high standard (clear, accurate, concise, appropriate to audience).
