The Opportunity
This is a rare national‑level Fleet Manager role where you will have full ownership of a large, diverse New Zealand‑wide fleet and the authority to shape its future direction. Reporting to executive leadership and presenting directly to the Chief Executive, you’ll set the strategy for acquisition, utilisation, maintenance and disposal while leading both in‑house workshops and national service providers. A long‑established, New Zealand‑owned organisation operating one of the country’s largest and most diverse commercial fleets. With multiple sites nationwide, internal maintenance facilities, and several hundred assets ranging from light commercial through to heavy and specialist vehicles, the business has a strong reputation for reliability, safety and operational excellence.
The Role
- Develop and deliver a comprehensive national fleet strategy encompassing acquisition, specification, utilisation, maintenance and disposal.
- Provide strategic leadership to internal workshop teams and manage relationships with external maintenance providers.
- Drive ongoing improvements in fleet safety, reliability, cost‑per‑km and environmental performance.
- Ensure full compliance with all NZTA, Health & Safety at Work, CoF, RUC, chain‑of‑responsibility and environmental regulations.
- Oversee the ongoing development and utilisation of fleet systems including Navman, Fleetpro and associated routing / technology platforms.
- Deliver high‑quality reporting and insights on fleet performance to the Chief Executive and executive leadership team.
- Collaborate closely with Operations, Finance and senior stakeholders to align fleet investment with business growth plans.
- Negotiate and manage key national supplier agreements (leasing, fuel, tyres, repairs, telematics).
- Champion a safety‑first culture and lead continuous improvement initiatives across all regions.
Your Profile
Demonstrated success in a senior or national fleet management role overseeing a large and geographically spread operation.Strong commercial and financial acumen with proven ability to reduce total cost of ownership while maintaining service levels.In‑depth knowledge of New Zealand transport legislation, heavy vehicle compliance and safety obligations.Hands‑on experience leading fleet management systems and telematics platforms (Navman, Fleetpro or similar).Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence at executive level and manage national supplier partnerships.Proven leadership capability, comfortable coaching regional teams and driving cultural change.A mechanical trade background or formal qualifications in transport / logistics would be an advantage but are not essential.Solutions‑focused, resilient and collaborative leadership style.Candidates must hold valid working rights for New Zealand.Ready for your next challenge?
