We are seeking an AI Integration & Research Specialist to lead the application of artificial intelligence in certification and engineering-related processes. About the Role
This role is focused on integrating AI into administrative workflows, supporting research teams in data-driven experiments, and supervising AI training pipelines. It supports HERA’s Fabrication 4.0 Division with AI applications in the areas of R&D, certifications, inspections and applications development. This versatile role offers flexible working hours based at HERA’s headquarters in Auckland and involves regular travel to client sites.

Key Responsibilities
AI Development & Integration
- Design and implement AI-driven solutions to optimise certification and administrative processes.
- Develop expert and rule-based systems to codify engineering standards and workflows.
- Build and deploy LLM-based applications for inspections, weld quality analysis, and documentation review.
- Create applications and APIs to integrate AI with engineering and enterprise software.
- Establish structured prompt engineering practices and reusable prompt libraries for certification and inspection tasks.
Research & Experimentation
Collaborate with research teams to design and set up experiments for AI data collection.Support practical experiments to capture inspection and quality-related datasets.Supervise and mentor a team of AI trainers / annotators preparing and labelling data.Ensure experimental workflows meet the requirements for robust, unbiased AI model training.Contribute to R&D projects and funding applications by embedding AI methodologies and tools.Support the development of AI-enabled research deliverables in partnership with engineering experts.Document AI research methods and provide technical input for project proposals.Member & Stakeholder Support
Support HERA members (and partner organisations) with the adoption of AI-based solutions.Provide training, workshops, and practical guidance on AI implementation.Act as a bridge between AI research outputs and real-world industry applications.Qualifications & Experience
Required :
Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Physics or related field (postgraduate preferred, or equivalent practical experience).5+ years of hands-on experience in AI / ML model development, deployment, and integration.Proven experience in LLMs, NLP, and expert systems for applied use cases.Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).Experience with cloud AI platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Vertex AI) and MLOps practices.Background in document AI, OCR, and workflow automation.Demonstrated experience supervising teams for data annotation / training.Preferred :
Experience with research funding applications.Experience developing and deploying APIs, apps, and integration tools.Knowledge of hybrid AI approaches (combining symbolic reasoning and ML).Experience in developing and deploying digital twins for engineering, manufacturing, or infrastructure systems.Ability to work independently and deliver projects on time.Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams (design, production, IT, research).Effective communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.Project management and stakeholder engagement skills (especially if working with industry clients).High level of spoken and written English, with excellent communication skills.What HERA Offers
