Job description

Health Care Assistant – Dunedin – Te Waipounamu - NPHS

  • Contribute to transforming the future of health in this Health Care Assistant role
  • Permanent part-time 0.8 FTE
  • Based in Dunedin

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.

We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

Are you passionate about making a difference in people's lives every day?

As a Health Care Assistant, you'll be an essential part of our healthcare team, working alongside nurses and midwives to provide safe, supportive, and compassionate care.

  • Supporting patients and whanau – helping create a welcoming, child-friendly, and safe environment.
  • Keeping clinics running smoothly – tidying rooms, maintaining infection control, and ensuring equipment is ready to go.
  • Team player – assisting nurses with both clinical and non-clinical tasks, and stepping in to cover reception when needed.
  • Hands-on support – providing chaperone or transport within the ward or department.
  • Growing your skills – attending training workshops and learning on the job under the guidance of registered professionals.
  • About the Team / Service / Location

Our Vaccine Preventable Disease Team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora.

We're a passionate, connected team working across boundaries to deliver public health services that are locally grounded, regionally coordinated, and nationally aligned.

Based in the stunning Southland, our mahi is as diverse as the communities we serve.

From coast to countryside, we're committed to improving health outcomes and equity through strong relationships, cultural responsiveness, and a shared vision for thriving tamariki and whanau.

    About you

We're looking for someone who brings energy, integrity, and a commitment to making a difference.

  • Respectful of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – you understand its significance and apply its principles meaningfully in your work.
  • Resilient and well-balanced – you look after your own wellbeing and have the stamina to thrive in a busy healthcare environment.
  • Collaborative – you build strong relationships across teams, communities, and sectors.
  • Driven and accountable – you take initiative, deliver results, and own your responsibilities.
  • Professional and self-aware – you continuously grow your practice, uphold high standards, and act with integrity.
  • Experience as a Vaccinating Health Worker or in a vaccination programme, and relevant health or community experience would be a bonus.

    Working at Health New Zealand

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is dedicated to ensuring excellent healthcare for the people of New Zealand.

We embrace a workforce that is diverse and inclusive so that we are better positioned to understand and serve our community.
