Job description

Location : Hutt Hospital

Contract : Permanent, Part Time 0.4 FTE Rostered and Rotating

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders.

Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whanau-centred care, and excellence.

About the Role

The Matanga Tapuhi Nurse Practitioner (NP), Emergency Department is an autonomous practitioner who works independently and collaboratively with the wider emergency department team to provide an individual and population-based approach to meet healthcare needs.

This hospital based role improves access to services and requires a flexible approach to work across a variety of health care settings including all areas of the emergency department.

Matanga Tapuhi Nurse Practitioners combine advanced nursing knowledge and skills with diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic knowledge to provide patient-centred healthcare services including the diagnosis and management of health consumers with common and complex health conditions.

The provision of coaching, mentorship and / or supervision for nurses in a variety of settings will be key to the success of the role.

About the Team / Service Location

Hutt Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) is part of the Hospital Operations Group within the Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district.

As one of six key operational groups across the district's provider services, it supports care ranging from primary to tertiary level and serves not only the local community but also the wider Central Region.

Operating across Wellington Regional, Hutt, and Kenepuru Hospitals, the group delivers responsive and high-quality care to a diverse and often high-acuity patient population.

Hutt ED is a dynamic and fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.

The team is highly adaptable, responding to a wide range of presentations, including a significant number of Maori, Pasifika, and elderly patients with complex health and social needs.

As such, our care is grounded in cultural safety, clinical excellence, and a strong sense of equity and inclusion.

We are a vibrant, professional, and caring team who role model what it means to work as a whanau.

We support each other through the challenges and celebrate our collective achievements.

With a strong commitment to staff development, Hutt ED offers structured opportunities to grow clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and leadership capability.

We take pride in fostering advanced nursing roles and offer well-established education pathways that encourage nurses to progress and thrive in emergency care.

If you are a compassionate and motivated Nurse Practitioner, whether bringing prior ED experience or eager to develop in this specialty, we welcome you to join a team that values learning, support, and making a real difference in the lives of our patients.

About you

You are a compassionate and professional Nurse Practitioner who brings clinical expertise, leadership, and a strong commitment to equitable, patient-centered care.

With a minimum of four years' clinical practice within your defined scope of specialty, you have developed comprehensive knowledge of the New Zealand health system, the District environment, and the systems and processes that support high-quality emergency care.

As a highly skilled clinician, you are an expert in advanced nursing procedures and confident in autonomous decision-making.

You're recognised as a credible and trusted professional resource within the healthcare team, bringing experience in leadership, service development, and clinical mentorship.

You apply coaching and mentoring approaches to support the growth of others and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

You stay current with emerging issues and trends in the nursing profession and are committed to advancing evidence-based practice.

Your exceptional attention to detail, strong time management, and critical thinking skills ensure you provide safe, effective, and responsive care in a dynamic emergency setting.

Just as importantly, you bring curiosity, energy, and a willingness to learn.

You value respectful communication and thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment.

While emergency department experience is an advantage, your adaptability and drive to further develop your emergency nursing practice within a supportive team are key.

At Hutt ED, we are more than just colleagues, we're a work whanau.

We support one another through the tough days and celebrate the wins together.

If you're ready to bring your clinical expertise and leadership to a team that values connection, teamwork, and genuine care, we'd love to hear from you.
